Switzerland Through the Ages
At the meeting point of Switzerland, Germany and France, Basel is an eclectic mix of historic and modern, tranquil and vibrant, with Swiss cleanliness and efficiency thrown in for good measure.
Augusta Raurica, on the outskirts, has a well-preserved Roman theater, while the Old Town is a museum of medieval buildings. The Renaissance Town Hall looks down on Marktplatz’s daily market, while the red sandstone and colorful tiles of the Münster were reconstructed in the 19th century. Bringing it right up to date are the modern creations of city residents Herzog & De Meuron, designers of London’s Tate Modern.
When you’ve finished exploring this architectural heritage, there are still plenty of things to do in Basel. The city’s fine art museum is the world’s oldest art collection, and the zoo is the oldest and largest in Switzerland. Remember to bring plenty of Swiss francs for the shopping mile along Clarastrasse and Freiestrasse.
The Basel accommodations on Booking.com range from hotels in Grossbasel to B&Bs in Kleinbasel, home to the nightlife. If you’re flying into Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg Airport in February or March, you might just catch Fasnacht, Switzerland’s biggest carnival. You’ll have to get up early to catch the 4 am start, though!

We absolutely loved the zoo! Quite small but the layout was deceptive so that it seemed much larger. The animals appeared well cared for and the enclosures were spacious with attention to enriching the environment for them, while at the same time allowing the visitors to get very close to them. In a very expensive country the entrance fee was very reasonable and half price with the Basel card. The university botanical garden was also a little gem with a collection of unusual plants beautifully displayed and free to visit. Basel itself an attractive city with a good feel about it. Don’t miss the quirky fountains near the theatre in the centre of town. Everything is very expensive for a British visitor which applies to Switzerland in general.JacquiUnited Kingdom - 8.0Scored 8.0

Perfect for a city break and good connection even to travel to other cities nationally and internationally as Basel is sandwhiched between France and Germany so, up to you where your heart will lead you for a day trip towards those countries. Lovely city, but very expensive!
Lovely city, but very expensive! Mind you that most kitchens close at 21h and don't accept customers well in advance, as well as lots of places are closed on Sundays and Mondays. Go for all the beauty of the city, but bring the big wallet and plan to eat out early if you don't rent a place with a kichen and cook yourself. Don't bother to stay on a Monday, and consider to leave early on a Sunday, those two days are very, very quiet in Basel!

Very nice city, everything is very tidy. The public transportation is very good. A lot of tramways and every several minutes coming the next one. We used tramway 8 to go to Germany and tramwat 3 to go to France. I recomend to visist the Stadtcasino and also to take the train and to go to Augusta Raurica about 20 km from Basel. Very vibrant as far as the museums are concerned. City for art lovers. Also very easy to move within the city with any kind of public transportation. Transportation was free, and the museums are for half the regular price with the card given by the hotel.FCOzTurkey
